Cherry Beach, Long Beach

Report from Baytubers.com:

Thanks Hank!

Man, I'm glad I started somewhere relatively easy... Palos Verdes would've been murder! I got to Cherry Beach around 10am and took some extra time to make sure I had everything. Well, it still wasn't enough because I forgot to get my hat and my jigheads out of the car--LOL. Oh well, it turned out to be more an exercise in getting in/out and navigating the waters than fishing anyway. Fished for about 3 hours before my legs got tired... Had plenty of bites but only came away with one shorty halibut. Here are some pics:

As you can see from the pictures, the water was very brown with no visibility. Is this the infamous red tide or is it normally like this?

Palos Verdes

Report from Pierfishing.com:

Arrived at PV around 11am with a friend. As I was getting my gear out of the car, a police officer stopped by and asked to see my fishing license. I told him I thought only DFG wardens checked for it, but he said police had jurisdiction in this area, too. That, and he was checking for poachers, he said. So I showed him my license, he checked it out, then thanked us for our time. Strange thing is that he didn't ask my buddy for his license.

My buddy thought this was weird and brought up the topic of racial profiling... You see, as the officer came near, I was the only one at the car while my buddy was off looking over the cliffs. I was in my ghetto fishing outfit so maybe that made me look like an Asian immigrant or something. As I was searching for my license, that's when my buddy (who's a white guy) walked up and joined us. The officer didn't say a word to him even though he stood right next to us. It's not like the officer was nasty or anything, but something just didn't seem right about it.

Anyway, onto the skunk... My friend and I fished at PV today from around 11am to 3pm. We fished 4-5" swimbaits with squid strips. Felt a few bites, but we weren't able to land any fish. Waves were quite large as they crashed into the rocks. So we put the rods down and decided to explore the area a bit...

I hope to get back out there on Sunday with my newly purchased float tube!

Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica

Just another Saturday out on the pier with my daughter. I'll usually throw out a Sabiki which is how I caught the baby barracuda.

She's got one!

Palos Verdes

Report from Pierfishing.com:

Snuck out to PV for a couple hours while my computer was getting its innards swapped. Fished from 11am to 2pm... Got a real good look at some of the hiding spots because of the low tide.

Tried Texas rigging a couple artificial worms but had problems getting snagged (one worm had its tail bitten off). Lost 3 of the arkey jigs... the low tide kept the kelp pretty thick. Caught a 16" calico bass and my first rockfish--a 7 to 8" kelp rockfish.

Palos Verdes and King Harbor, Redondo Beach

Report from Pierfishing.com:

Fished Palos Verdes again this morning around 6:30am. The water was very low even during the high tide. This time I came prepared with some snagless jigs, in particular the Bassdozer 3/8 oz. Arkey jig head paired with a 3" Big Hammer swimbait. Didn't lose any tackle--woot! :) But after landing a short calico, it was pretty dead the rest of the day.

Hopped on over to King Harbor jetty and threw out some grubs on both sides. There were several hits with two grubs coming back without a tail, but I wasn't able to land any. Opaleye? I was thinking the #4 circle hook was just too big for their mouths. Asked around and it didn't seem like anyone else was having success, either.

But it was a nice day to be out, especially after the brief rains the night before. Although this freaked me out a bit... Cat bones? Whatever they were, they were picked clean--not a single piece of anything on them.

Tried hooping for the first time and took my daughter with me. Caught a couple dink crabs and that was it. Spent most of my time chasing my daughter around.

Redondo Pier, Redondo Beach

Report from Pierfishing.com:

My dad and I hit Redondo on Sunday from around 4pm to 10pm to try for some lobster. No lobster, but we got a bunch of small crabs, an octopus (very cool!), and a couple snails with cone shaped housing (can anyone help identify?) Hashem and his wife were good enough to stop by and drop off my hoodie... and fish, of course (well, not his wife)! He also brought over a new friend who he had just met on the pier (nice to meet you Larry). My dad manned the Sabiki and caught 2 barracuda, probably a dozen small spanish mackerel which we used for bait, and about 6 mackerel. I tried for some halibut but came up empty with just half-eaten bait to show for my efforts.

Good times!

Palos Verdes and Hermosa Pier, Hermosa Beach

Report from Pierfishing.com and Pierfishing.com:

Met noviceboy on Saturday and fished the rocks off Palos Verdes but we came away empty handed. Our inexperience showed as we were snagged on just about every single cast. Decided to make a quick stop to Hermosa to regain what was left of our pride... Met up with Tim who was fishing for halibut. I got raked once and he had a couple good bites that got away. Both Thomas and Tim landed bonito while I had a hard time pulling one up with my light tackle. The sea lions were in full force stealing catches including one from Tim (we should've been paying attention more closely).
