Redondo Beach

Report from Baytubers.com:

Launched from King Harbor (used the area next to the closed dock) around 9am and headed out towards the canyon. Had fun watching the Matrix 17 give me depth readings and I assumed I was there when it quickly dropped from 50 to 150 ft. I paddled around trying to get some fish readings but unfortunately came up empty. I thought maybe I'd installed the fishfinder incorrectly and decided to drop some squid strips on #4 hooks anyway. Zero bites. Here's the flatline as I drifted around 190 ft.

The waves were getting to me and my confidence fell fast so I thought I'd head back to the harbor in order to play around with the settings. Some pics:

Well, after messing with the sensitivity settings I finally got some readings as I hung around the rocks and the bait barge. Went back out to the jetty (around 25 - 30 ft.) and dropped whenever the alarm went off. Still nada. But it was a good day to be out anyway... Lots of friendly folks were out kayaking. Also saw a couple guys spearfishing.

Do you guys that own Matrix fishfinders have any advice on the settings?

Redondo Beach

Report from Baytubers.com:

Hey guys, last time I posted here I was talking about float tubing. Well, after just one outing on the tube I decided to get myself a kayak instead. :) In a nutshell I feel much more confident navigating the waters on a kayak.

Today was my second time out and I got to King Harbor around 10am. I fished squid strips on a hi-lo setup outside the jetty and caught a couple whitefish and plenty of macs. Wasn't targeting the macs, but they were pretty aggressive on the drop. It was a nice day to be out! I'd really like to try the nearby artificial reef or the canyon (are those too far for a kayak?)

BTW, I'd like to get a fishfinder and I've been looking at the Humminbird Matrix 47 (the 3D one). Do any of you have experience with it? Frankly, in my limited experience with fishfinders I've found them difficult to read and I'm wondering if the 3D look would help.
